Bioerosion of the coralline alga Hydrolithon onkodes by microborers in the coral reefs of Moorea, French Polynesia ArchiMer
Tribollet, A; Payri, C.
Calcareous skeletons of the coralline alga Hydrolithon onkodes are colonised by a variety of microboring organisms including euendolithic algae. The species composition of microboring organisms as well as the boring patterns and the boring activity differ between live and dead coralline crusts. The microborers inhabiting the live crusts form an obvious, macroscopically visible green layer in the basal part of the crust, which is in contact with the substratum underneath. Some species, primarily Plectonema terebrans (83 %) and Ostreobium quekettii (7 %) grow from the inside towards the crust's surface and produce a dense network of branched filaments. Following the death of the coralline alga, the skeletons are colonised at the surface and bored inward by...

Petit, Tristan.
Airborne hyperspectral imaging is a potential candidate for mapping and monitoring coral reefs at large scale and with high spatial resolution. In this thesis, we first present the processing steps to be applied to hyperspectral signals for extracting information about seabed types, bathymetry and water optical properties, and we discuss their efficiency with respect to two main confounding factors: (i) low signal to noise ratio of the measured signals, and (ii) large number and variability of physical interactions occurring between the entrance of sunlight into the atmosphere and its measurement by the hyperspectral sensor. Considering these limitations, we examine the performance of an already existing water column processing method: semi-analytical...

Letourneur, Yves; Labrosse, Pierre; Kulbicki, Michel.
Fish from lagoon and reef in New Caledonia are mainly caught by artisanal fisheries and subsistence fishing. The present study aimed at estimating these fish standing stocks, at finding the main factors influencing the spatial distribution of these fish, and at estimating the maximum sustainable yield with considerations for socio-economic aspects sensu late. A total of 1406 stations was surveyed in the Northern Province of New Caledonia. Sampling was stratified according to three zones (north, east and west) and three biotopes (coral reefs, near-reef areas and lagoon bottoms). This work demonstrates the existence of important fish stocks of commercial interest in reefal and lagoonal waters of the Northern Province, estimated at about 138 300 t. The...

ArchiMer
Ropert, Michel; Mouquet, Pascal; Bajjouk, Touria; Delacourt, Christophe.

Mouquet, Pascal; Ropert, Michel; Bajjouk, Touria; Delacourt, Christophe.

Internal bioerosion of Acropora formosa in Reunion (Indian Ocean): microborer and macroborer activities ArchiMer
Zubia, M; Peyrot-clausade, M.
Bioerosion by grazing and boring organisms is one of the major destructive forces operating on reef. The aim of this study was to estimate the intensity of internal bioerosion by both microflora and fauna of Acropora, a branching scleractinian, on the reef flat at La Saline (Reunion, Indian Ocean). Internal bioerosion was estimated at two sites, varying in degrees of eutrophication. At each site, dead Acropora subjected to heavy grazing or covered by algal turf were examined. Acropora formosa is subjected to high bioerosion due to its high porosity and its branching form, which facilitates colonisation by boring organisms. Three endolithic microflora species, Plectonema terebrans, Mastigocoleus testarum and Ostreobium queckettii colonised the branches. The...

Urbina-barreto, Isabel.
Habitat structural complexity plays a key role in the dynamics and resilience of coral reef communities. The critical situation of coral reef ecosystems beseeches a rapid improvement of monitoring tools to assist in the implementation of efficient conservation measures. Today, new reef assessment technologies support researchers and managers to collect information safer, faster, and with greater accuracy. Among them, photogrammetry by Structure-from-Motion (SfM) creates three-dimensional models and reef zone maps from overlapping images to conduct quantitative surveys of benthic communities. This thesis addressed four objectives: 1) define underwater photogrammetry protocols to create 3D models of coral colonies and reefscapes, in order to conduct physical...

Photoacclimatization in the zooxanthellae of Pocillopora verrucosa and comparison with a pelagic algal community ArchiMer
Maritorena, S; Payri, C; Babin, M; Claustre, H; Bonnafous, L; Morel, A; Rodiere, M.
Photoacclimatization of zooxanthellae extracted from the coral Pocillopora verrucoso was studied through the determination of pigments, light absorption and photosynthetic parameters. for samples collected in summer and winter between 1 and 40 m on a northwestern reef of Tahiti (French Polynesia). The same measurements were also performed on phytoplanktonic samples collected at a stable oceanic site north of the island. For the zooxanthellae, the variations with depth of all the parameters were generally of small amplitude. Seasonal differences were also observed. The photosynthetic to non-photosynthetic pigments ratio was higher at depth in both seasons and was higher in winter. The intracellular concentration of chlorophyll a and photosynthetic pigments...

Bagnis, R.; Inoue, A.; Rongeras, S.; Galonnier, M.; Bennett, J.; Chanteau, S.; Pastural, J..
We have carried out on a fringing reef of Tahiti, catching periodically ciguateric fishes, a comparative dynamic survey of the population density of GAMBERDISCUS TOXICUS and some linked environmental factors, during a four year period. Half of the marine parameters, i.e. temperature, salinity, dissolved NO2, NO3, PO34, SiO2, have been systematically studied according to a weekly or a monthly rhythm ; the other parameters, i.e. pH, dissolved NH3, 02, C and B12 vitamin have been studied episodically. The local pluviometry for the two weeks preceeding the samplings has also been measured. The statistical analysis of the data did not allow us to observe any significant simple correlation between the physical or chemical parameters and the density of G,...

The aim of this paper is to present in a practical fashion the status of the use of remote sensing for the study of coral reef environments through the analysis of work published in the years 1980-2000. We review the scales of the potential work and of that actually conducted, the principal applications and their limiting factors. We detail these limitations which are of a technological nature (spatial and spectral resolution of sensors), as well as often of a conceptual (role of remote sensing in the study) or methodological (image processing) nature. The understanding of these limitations, in relation to the reality of the field, allows identification of work which could be undertaken in the years 2000.
